Whispers from the Reef
Project type
Mixed media embroidery
A sculptural collection of embroidered shells, Whispers from the Reef captures the delicate interplay between land and sea, stitch and shell, tradition and transformation.
Each piece begins with a naturally sourced shell — majestic forms such as the Major Harp, Conch, Melon Cymbium, White Murex, and Murex shells — chosen for their sculptural elegance and historical resonance as vessels of the sea. Into these natural exoskeletons, intricate coral-inspired hand embroidery is delicately nestled, creating a striking contrast between the organic hardness of the shell and the soft complexity of threadwork.
Stitched using a variety of traditional techniques including tambour embroidery, goldwork, and fine hand beading, each coral form emerges from within, as if the shell itself is reawakening — a living memory of the reef it once belonged to. Metallic threads, sequins, pearl purl, and hand-dyed fibres echo the shimmer of underwater light and the fragile, fractal beauty of coral structures.
These works transform the shell into more than just a found object; it becomes a canvas, a cradle, a shrine. Embroidery spills from their interiors like hidden marine worlds revealing themselves — quiet sculptural beauties that invite viewers to lean in closer and listen to their silent stories.
Whispers from the Reef is a collection that honours both the wonders of the deep and the intricacy of handwork — merging the ancient language of the ocean with the timeless art of embroidery, one shell at a time.
