About the talk
A Defiant Approach to Hand Embroidery is an inspiring and thought-provoking journey into textile art that challenges traditional expectations of what embroidery can be.
Through storytelling, imagery and examples of her work, Claire shares how she has pushed beyond the boundaries of conventional hand embroidery, exploring new ways of creating that are both expressive and unconventional.
From her early experiences, including her Hand & Lock entry and MA studies, to developing a distinctive artistic voice, Claire reveals how her practice has evolved into something far less predictable and far more personal.
Working and living full-time on the road, her creative process is shaped by movement, environment, and experimentation. She incorporates alternative materials such as concrete and resin into her embroidery, creating textured, layered pieces that blur the line between textile art and mixed media.
This is a talk about more than stitch
It's about questioning expectations, embracing creative risk, and finding your own way of making - even when it means doing things differently.
