Small Reef Brooch

This exclusive, handmade piece is inspired by my deep fascination with the beauty of coral reefs. Every bead, sequin, and thread is carefully hand-stitched, creating a rich, intricate design.

The creative journey behind this brooch began with my experience of learning to scuba dive in the Caribbean Ocean, where I was mesmerized by the vibrant underwater world. My research, sketches, and final project for my Master of Arts in Contemporary Embroidery all contributed to the creation of The Coral Collection.

Meticulously crafted over approximately four hours, this brooch is stitched onto a silk organza base with layers of 100% merino wool felt, adding depth to the coral-inspired textures. It features wool and cotton threads, a dazzling mix of glass seed beads, reflective miracle beads that shimmer in the light, sequins, goldwork copper purls, crystal bicones, and is finished with soft metallic kid leather and a traditional brooch back.

Each piece is truly unique—I use a needle and thread much like a painter uses a brush, working directly onto the fabric and allowing the colours and materials to guide the composition, bringing the textures and hues of the coral reef to life.
