White Murex Shell I

A unique one off design that is handmade, totally unique and inspired by my fascination with the beauty of coral reef. Each bead, sequin and thread is individually sewn by hand which builds up a sumptuous and intricate design that nestles inside a beautiful and sculptural white murex shell.

The embroidery nestles within the internal curves of the shell and took 15 hours to stitch. 3d bead embroidery techniques were used to construct the embroidery, laid on a base of silk organza and using multiple types of beads, crystals, goldwork copper purls and sequins.

The design process started with my experience of learning to scuba dive in the Caribbean Ocean and seeing the beauty of the world under the sea. Researching, drawing and designing throughout my final project of my Master of Arts in Contemporary Embroidery has led to creating "The Coral Collection".

Each piece is totally unique as I use a needle and thread like others use a paintbrush, drawing directly onto the fabric, letting the colours and materials guide me to build up beautiful surfaces reminiscent of the textures, colours and shapes of the coral reef.
